I have created this page because i thought the information contained in this blog would help you and you
would have little less hard time compared to me.
One who comes to London will have following questions in his/her mind.I have tried to answers almost all questions but you can probably contact me by posting comment to get more info.
- How much Pound i should carry for the first time ?
You should carry atleast £ 1400 to £ 1600 GBP with you ,so you can survive quite easily for atleast 3 months.
- What are the living expense in London ?
Living expense depends upon the area where you live and on life style but single person survive in £ 300 to £ 400 quite easily. For a couble expense would much more higher. If couple wants to live in Sharing house then it would cost you around £ 650 and in rented 1 BHK flat , it would cost you around £ 1000.
Please note this figures including everything like Council Tax , Water , Electricity & Gas etc.
- What is best place to live in London initially ?
I would recommend to start with Wembley as you will feel pretty homely in Wembley and you will get everything in cheap price plus you get every item which you get in India.
There are lots of ppl who lives in far far away from Wembley but they come to Wembley for stuffsA like Groceries , Autentic Restuarant etc.
I used to be fan of Kashmiri soda which i used to drink a lot in my childhood but afterward it wasnt available in India but i do find it here in Wembley ,so i guess you got my point.
- Where to get to Pound converted from INR ?
There are so many banks and agents who does it.Here are few of them.
Thomas cook
Moneygram
Western Union Monry Transfer
SBI
BOB
HDFC
ICICI
- Who will give best rate for GBP ?
The Bank of Baroda will give the best rate for conversion.SBI is also good in that case.
- How to book flight ticket ?
Go for Makemytrip.com because there you get special rates setup by makemytrip.com else you will have to pay more if you go for some local agent.
- what is the best time to enter in UK ?
Starting of March is the best time to enter in UK because you get around 6 months to settled down before the bluddy winter starts.
- Do i need to carry chest X-ray or not with me ?
You must carry the X-ray for Chest with you because if you dont get it with you then you will have to queue for X-ray in immigration area and which would waste a lot of time.
- How to reach to particular destination from Heathrow airport ?
London is famous for its Transp0ort.You get all kind of of transport from Heathrow.Just come out immigration area and you will find sign boards which would lead you to bus station or taxi stand. Please dont forget to have Costa's coffee before you leave Heathrow.
- Where and how to get accommodation and will it fit into my budget or not ?
Search for accomodation using gumtree.com.its one of the best site i have ever seen.It has very good search options.Just select the part in gumtree and search for accomodation which suits to you.Note that Wembley is in North London.
- What are the ways of public transport in London ?
London stands second in Transportation across the world ( Japan is first ).
There are four ways for public transport.
- The world famous Underground Tube ( Cuts down the journey time to great extent )
- Bus ( Chepest One )
- National Rails ( Fucking costly )
- Tram ( No idea )
- How to plan the travel ?
Go to http://tfl.gov.uk or http://transportdirect.info and plan the travel using Post codes.
- What is Oyster Card and where to get it from ?
Oyest Card is common pass for Bus and Underground trains. You can get it from Any train station or from any local news agent.
If you do not have Oyster card then jouney within one zone would cost you £ 2 but if you have oyster card then same journey would cost you £ 1.
You can get more info on ,
https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk/oyster/entry.do
- How to get mobile number in London and what docs are required to get the mobile number in London ?
There are two possible options available.
- Pay as go ( In india - prepaid )
- Monthly Pay ( In India - post paid )
You have to go for Pay as go option because for second option you need to enter into 12 0r 18 months contract with your sim card verdor and as you will be new to UK , no one will give you contract.
Pay as go is damn costly but easily available where in Monthly pay has very good schemes and cheap compared to pay as you go.
- How to and where to start job hunting ?
I am an IT guy ,so i have only idea about IT.
Before you start your hunting , i would recommend to visit famous place of london coz you may not get leisure time afterwards.
For IT guys here are the wellknown job portals.
- www.cwjobs.co.uk ( I got the job using this oneA )
- www.s1jobs.com ( Only for scotland jobs )
- How to prepare for Interview ?
Before you prepare yourself for an interview , you need to prepare the resume as per UK standards.
N most imp things in UK standard based resume is that you need to do lot of show off that you have done this n that blaw blaw...
If you have any certification than use their logo in resume. Logos are very important because UK's consultants gets lot of resume per day and they dont have time to go though it ,so if you put logo then they will find it more interasting.
Now coming down to your preparations,
Go and buy new Complete suit if you are not carrying it with you.You must wear a suit while going for any interview for any kind of job.
Speaks slowly and softly.
Make them believe that you are the only one who fits into the job spec.
You will be able to crack the interviews quite easily if you follow above guidance because in UK technical knowldge does not matter as compared to personality.

Hi Dev,
I can not appreciate your work with just 1 or 2 words.
This is your another blog i felt very great useful to all who plan to come to UK.
Kudos to your work.
Hi Dev ,
I have a query.
I want to apply for jobs from India.(Holding Tier1)
I am planning to buy UKs land line number and route calls to skype account.
We can manage that we are in UK in all our telephonic interviews, but what to do if they ask for personal round(face to face) interview.
Hi Sridhar,
Thanks for your kind words.
I am really happy to see my efforts are not getting wasted and ppl finds it useful.
You can get call routed to india using skype but i wont recommend to do it because consultant may ask you come for personal interview with them first and then they may take you to client and if you are not able to do so then that particular consultant would not call you in future.
You can buy a time by bluffing but its not confirmed that you would get the job even if you come to UK in short notice.
The only options is come to UK and start looking for job.I can help you in finding initial accommodation if you don’t have any friend or relatives in UK.
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Dev
Hi dev,
Is there any limition of UK pound a person can carry. If yes then what is the maximum pounds can carry?.
Thanks and Regards
Loganathan
Hi Loganathan,
There is no limit on the money you can carry but it must not be more than £ 1000 in cash.
Any Money transfer agent would give you maximum of £ 1000 in cash and you need to carry travellers cheque for rest of the pound which you can en cash in UK.
You can en cash in Barclays Bank for free of cost. You need to carry your passport when you want to en cash it.

Dev
Hi,
My husband is planning to apply HSMP for him and HSMP dependent visa for me. I have one doubt. I have done Master’s degree(MCA) in Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam , Kerala. I just went through the PBS(Point Based Calaulator).I found that my university is not recognised for earning points based on education taught in English. What is the next step I have to do?Any alternative other than IElTS?
Hi Vidhya,
It seems that you are bit confused. As your husband is gonna be the main applicant then you dont need to produce any document for claiming the points.
Your husband must have enough point to get application approved.
For you he has to have Marriage Certificate , Fund Maintained in bank from last 3 months and sposership letter with accommodation proof.
I hope this clarifies. Please drop me comment if you need further help.
Regards,
Dev
Hi Dev,
Thank you very much for the guidnace.

Hi Dev,
I have been following your blog for a long time and at the outset, I would to thank you for the helpful information you have put up on this blog.
I am planning to come to UK some time in end of March 09. Is this a good time for jobs in IT? esp C/C++/Linux/JAva?
How much money in GBP should i carry initally for the first 2/3 months? PS note that, i would have to be pretty much on my own and find a job thr? PS take into considetation the cost of living for accomodation, utils bills, commuting, broadband, initial hosuse deposit, setting up stuff at appartment – essential things, grossories…. etc for 1 person?
Thanks
Hi Dev,
Thank you for all the information in this blog. Really appreciate it.
I’m planning to apply for my general tier 1 visa (HSW), hence I approached Y-Axis consultancy for suggestions and process, even though I had all the info available, but wanted some sort of confirmation.
My question is that, when I calculate in the PBS I’m earning exactly 75 points which makes me eligible to apply for HSMP, but Y-axis consultancy differs and says right now I’m ineligible due to the earnings factor.
I calculated as follows:
1. Age = 20points
2. Education: 30 points
3. Income (Salaried)= 390000INR (approx equal to 5200GBP by the current conversion rate at 1GBP=75INR) = 25points
Hence total is 75points.
However, for the last 1.5 years, I was staying in USA on a L1 Visa.I work for a wholly owned indian subsidiary of US Headquarted company, and they sent me to USA on a intra company transfer. Although my company doesnt pay any amount in terms of salary in USA, but covers all my expenses including (Food, Stay,Transportation,General expenses.) Since, I was staying in USA for the last 1.5years, Y-Axis consultant told me that, my indian income of 390000 (approx 5000GBP) is not counted and I should show an US Dollar income.
The scenario was something like this. I was initially sent to USA in Nov 07 to Jan 08 on a Business visa (B1).
I returnted to India and again in the month of April 08, I was again sent to USA and this time I was on a L1 Visa. I returned to India on Oct 08, and again went back on L1 visa in the month of Nov08 and returned back to India on Jan 09.
As far as I understand, I should still be eligible, but can you please help me out on my eligibility?
Many Thanks and God bless you.
Regards,
Shadab
My husband is applying for HSMP. For my application as a dependant, is it enough if we show funds availability in my husband’s account for the last 3 months or should there be any bank statement in my name showing required funds are available (for dependant)?
Will it be sufficient if we show sufficient funds for both of us from a joint account where I am the secondary applicant whilst my husband is the primary account holder?
Hi ,
Vidhya,
You can show funds either in your husbands account or you can show in your joint account.Anything is fine.
Please hurry up with the application as UK BA Agency is changing rules massively from April 2009 and you wont be eligible afterwards.

Hi Dev,
Truely your blog is a boon to people who are aspring to live and work in the UK! Thank you for the good work!!
I am from Bangalore, and have got my tier-1 visa along with my dependents(husband, and my 2 children).
I have a few queries that i would appreciate if you can provide some guidance on:
1. I am a PMP certifed IT Project Manager with over 10 years IT experience, my core expertise is in to Oracle ERP(financials, SCM, and HRMS) and Software Development(.Net, SQL, SDLC, Agile), and I also have delivered some IT Infrastructure projects like Deployment, Roll-outs and set-ups of Data Centers, Messaging(Exchange 2007), MOSS, Windows Server 2003, Vista Roll-outs etc. I also hold ITIL v3 certification. I have domain experience in Govt(Civil and Defense), Telecom, ITO, and SCM. I would like to know whats the UK job market like for my profile? (Though, i see a lots of job matching my profile at monster, and cwjobs, i would like to know from a person who is on the ground there.)
2. My husband is a SAP Material Management consultant, he has over 10 years of work experience out of which 6 years have been in to the core Supply Chain domain, and 4 years as the SAP functional consulting. How s the jobs for this skillset?
3. I was thinking to enter the UK along with my family, is it advisbale as you are searching for a job and settling down process?? What do you advise???
4. I am planning to arrive in the UK around early August, this would be about 3+ months from the day my visa is stamped, would this be a problem for extention/ILR???
I would be vert greaful to you if you can help me find answers for the above questions!
Thanks and best regards,
Asma
Hi Asma,
I really regret the delay in reposnse but i was out of England.
I think you n ur hubby will rule the UK because you have got wonferful exp and your hubby is a SAP consultant.
SAP is very very hot in UK.
ITLT has got very good reputation in UK market ,so u both can earn very well in UK.
You can enter into UK with your family though you do not have job.its fine.I recommend to come together so if either of you gets the job then other can survive quite easily before second gets the job.
If you do not enter UK in forst 3 months then you may feel problems during FLR.Please see i said you may.
Regards,
Dev
Hello Dev,
Thanks a million for your response, indeed its a big relief! really appreciate it!
Also dev, where can i find the detailed info on the ILR/FLR queries? I mean any forums, or any websites…. do let me know if you have any thing with regards.
See you soon in London!
Thanks agian….

Hi Dev,
Want to say that this is very nice of you to have this up. I can see that a lot of people have come to you for assistance and I cannot believe that you are doing this in your personal time. Kudos! I have just decided to apply for the Tier 1 (many thanks to you)although I must admit that I am very scared as this would mean that my husband and I will have to leave a very comfortable life for the unknown.
I wonder if you would have any information about the wireless technology job market. Is it possible for my husband to arrive there first and look for employment even if I am the main applicant.
Am not sure if you are the best person to ask about financial jobs as well.
Thanks for your help
Hi Dev,
Thanks a lot for solving my earlier queries!!!
I got the Tier-I visa within a week after applying!!!
I have few more queries:
1. My visa is valid from 1-July-2009. So, is it mandatory for me to travel by October (three months from the validity of the visa)? Or can I travel any time till the visa expires?
2. Can we apply for a dependent visa for my spouse being in India? Or do I have to travel UK first, get a job and accommodation and the sponsors?
Thanks in advance!!!
Regards,
Santosh

Hi Kala,
I dont know much about laguage but generally they will allow 30 KG per person but you can check with your airline.
Chest X-ray is mandatory ,so please carry it with you.If you dont bring it with you than you need to wait in long queue for x-ray on heathrow’s immigration area.

Dev

Dear Dev,
I am 34 yrs old and working in an pvt insurance co.My query is that I am interested for applying for tier 1 hsmp visa. I had the evaluation done from y-axis, gurgaon. I got 45 points for my earning but since I have done my post graduation from Institute of Marketing and Management, New Delhi i the yr 2002, they say that my PG course is not recognized by any university.
My question is how an a PG course which is a 2yr course can be recognized by a university, even IIM’s are also then not recognized. Otherwise i am having sufficient balance of rs 4lac in my bank a/c.My teaching has been in english only due to non recognition of m PG course I am not qualifying for HSMP according to y-axis solution. PLease guide me for my eligibility whether I can proceed with my case. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Hi Manpreet,
If you dont see your course in PBS than you can contact UK NARIC to get it confirmed and if they say no than no one can help you out.
Regards,
Dev

which means 35 points as per the guidelines.

Hi Dev,
I am planning to apply for HSMP in mid of Sep. I was maintaining the balance of 2800 GBP since last one month but somehow has spend some amount & now have around 2700 GBP in my a/c. What if I add the rest 100 pounds now. Will it solve the problem..As, in the bank statement my end balance will be 2800 only in that case. Pls suggest.
Also, when do I ve to show this fund proof. Is it initially or it takes a month time ?
Thanks and Regards,
Preeti
Hi Preeti,
Dont apply.Visa will be rejected surely.
Your maintainence fund must not fall under 2800 GBP in last three month. Not even for 1 min.
Add 100 GBP into account and wait for next 3 month.
I would recommend to maintain 3000 GBP so if even if you spend some in urgency than you will have buffer of 200 GBP.
Regards,
Dev
Thanks Gavin.
Hi Preeti,
You need to submit proof for maintainence fund for last 3 month ,so end balance wont help.
Regards,
Dev
Hi
I want to apply for HSMP visa for me. I have few queries -
1.That the funds which has to be in account for 90 days, can be in the form of Fixed Deposit ?
2. If my yearly in income is 257000 INR only, and I have a part time earning ( 3 months of a software project) of 150000 INR. If I submit both my salary slips(full time and part time), along with the offer letters, is there any chance of rejection of my visa based on the salary constraint.
Please answer my queries, its going to be of a great help.
Thanks !
One more query…If the pound rate is 79 Rs at that time I can still apply (as will ve 2800 gbp as per that rate) but if it exceeds that I will ve to wait for more time.
How is the rate calculated? Is it on the date of submission of aplication or some other way.
Kind Regards,
Hi Dev, My visa stamping says “no recourse to public funds”. So does this means that one is not eligible for medical/hospitalization with NHS?
Also can you let me know what is the time line for entering UK ? Can a person with stamping enter after 1 year also ?
Kind Regards.
